Before automated cigarette manufacturing machines were introduced, all cigarettes where made by hand. People worked on a line and rolled and glued the cigarettes one at a time. This process was slow and did not produce many cigarettes in a given day. Today, there are more than sixteen thousand cigarettes made each minute on one machine. Supply and demand. These companies will keep the cigarettes on the shelves and in your fingers as long as there is a demand for them.
The flipside is that offshore manufacturing leads to job losses in the manufacturer's country of origin, but then this again creates an extra incentive for those workers who have lost jobs to work hard so as to scale the high value jobs which their country has a comparative advantage to produce.
Job-specific training brings value to companies but can be very complicated when it comes to making sure every worker has had the best training possible to effectively produce the best products for customers. Especially in the manufacturing industry, efficiency is key and if products are not consistent with quality, they will be worse off in the economy.
As the United States continues to try to pull itself out of a recession, many people are wondering where manufacturing jobs stand in the faltering economy. But is manufacturing a growing industry in the United States? Well, it depends on whom you ask.
